Mish | Bonfire Night 2014

"Remember remember the fifth of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder, treason
Should ever be forgot..."
On a cold and crisp 5th November my mother and I trudged up to our local park to go and see the annual Bonfire Night Fireworks display. Hosted by Dundee City Council there are two events held in Dundee covering both side of the city and this was my first time at the event in my local area.

Bonfire night or Guy Fawkes Night is a truly peculiar and British tradition. It celebrates the failed attempt by Guido Fawkes (amongst others) an English Catholic who attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605 in order to kill King James I and replace him with a Catholic King. The religious aspect has completely vanished from today's celebrations and has now turned into a fun filled family event. Next year marks the 500 anniversary of the gunpowder plot so hopefully the councils across the nation will bring there A game to the proceedings.

After making some insane parking skills (the streets were mobbed) we soon joined the mass of people walking to the park and found ourselves a nice spot on a little hill. Radio Tay started the countdown and we were off! I couldn't get a good photo of the bonfire as we were too far away and by the time we got down to the front it was being put out :(

Bonfire night has always been a family occasion. We were standing beside twin boys who screamed with utter joy every time a firework went off which just reminded me how wonderful events like these are, seeing groups of family writing their names with sparklers, bonfire night really is something for the masses.

Just to let you in a little secret, it's blimmin hard to take photos of fireworks! Kudos to anybody who does it professionally (Professional firework photographer...is that such a thing??)

Hope you had a lovely Bonfire Night if you celebrate it.
Does anybody else celebrate an event only known in their country? Leave us a comment below we love hearing from you all!
